Wikia Policy List

These are guidelines for image uploads on Vampire Knight Wiki.

Ideal images

Ideal images on the wiki meet most or all of this criteria:

  • Official: Images should be from official sources or of official content, and they should not be heavily modified or stylized.
  • Properly licensed: Images should have a license selected when uploaded, typically the fair use license for official images.
  • Quality: Images should be high quality.
  • Filename: Image files should have useful names, and follow naming conventions when appropriate.
  • Useful: The image should have a purpose to be uploaded here, and it should be used somewhere on the wiki. It should be distinct from other images; not a duplicate or near-duplicate of other images.

What images are used for

Images are primarily uploaded on this wiki to illustrate article pages, allowing many of our readers to see what is happening in the story as they are reading the description. These images are to depict memorable moments in the anime or manga and should be relevant to the description that they are illustrating.

How to upload

There are a few ways to upload an image on the wiki. When uploading an image, please remember to select a licensing option.

Method #1:

  • In the top menu, hover your cursor over the "Explore" tab; from the drop-down menu, click "Images" -- this will take you to Special:NewFiles.
  • On Special:NewFile, in the top right corner, there is an "Add New Image" button. Clicking on this will result in an image submission pop-up window.
  • In the pop-up window, select or drag-and-drop an image to upload.
  • Select "More Options" at the bottom of the window.
  • Fill in the summary. Provide some useful information about what's being depicted and what's the source.
  • Select a licensing option. (For official images for the series, select the option under "Fair Use" at the top.)

Method #2:

  • Go to Special:Upload.
  • Next to "Source filename:" select the button "Choose File", and select the image you wish to upload.
  • Fill in the summary. Provide some useful information about what's being depicted and what's the source.
  • Select a licensing option. (For official images for the series, select the option under "Fair Use" at the top.)

Congrats, you have successfully uploaded your image!

Acceptable image file types

The three most common image file types are .png, .jpg/.jpeg, and .gif, although Fandom accepts others. If it can be uploaded, it's probably fine, although .png and .jpg are preferred.

If you are saving an image from an official source, do not convert the image just to upload it, as this will unnecessarily diminish the quality.

If you are scanning/saving an image for the wiki, take the following into consideration. All file types diminish some quality in compression, so take the type of image into consideration.

  • .png - This is the preferred file type for images that are solid color (no gradients) such as cleaned black-and-white images. This file type is not good for images with gradients, as it can make the gradient "streaky". This file type is not good for large scanned color images, since they make for immensely large files in .png format, so .jpg is probably a better fit for those.
  • .jpg - This tends to be best file type for large color scans. The image file size is more reasonable than a .png. For clean solid-color (such as black-and-white) images, .png might be a better file type even at large sizes.
  • .gif - Animated images should generally be avoided, but occasional exceptions can be approved by an admin when motion is an important aspect to depict for a topic.

Acceptable image quality

Images uploaded to the wiki should generally be high quality and high resolution, if available. When using these images on articles, however, they will be placed at a much smaller size for thumbnails.

Official images that are uploaded to the wiki should be the highest quality available. When saving an image from an official source, such as promotional images released through official websites or official social media, it should not be modified or resized.

Scanned images typically do not need to be larger than 300 MB.

Low quality images can be allowed when necessary. If the only glimpse of a character is a small resolution image, then that's preferable to having no image at all. Certain images used for specific areas of the wiki, such as crops used for infoboxes or navigation galleries, can also be smaller than standard images, due to their specific purpose on the wiki.

Acceptable file names

When uploading an image, please give it a useful filename. Filenames cannot be changed by regular users, so please properly name your files before uploading to the wiki. Useful filenames will also allow users to more easily find images that they are looking for.

Avoid uploading files with names such as "tumblr5454684733543.jpg" or "fullsize88736573113.jpg".

If you do not properly name your files, a mod or admin may rename it and update the page.

Useful filenames

Useful filenames typically include some or all of the following:

  • What is being depicted, such as the name of characters and what's happening, e.g. Zero attacks Kaname
  • The source, such as an anime episode, a manga chapter, or an artbook. The following abbreviations can be used to indicate the source, but they are not required:
    • VK ## - For Vampire Knight episodes, e.g VK 10 - Yuki running.png
    • VKG ## - For Vampire Knight Guilty episodes, e.g. VKG 09 - Zero staring.jpg
    • VKI PG## - For Vampire Knight Illustrations
    • VKLN PG## - For Vampire Knight Last Night

Chapter title page filenames

Chapter title pages should have specific names based on the source. The format is "Ch##" or "Memories ch##" and should be followed by the source, e.g. "LaLa" for LaLa magazine and "Viz" for the Viz volume. The following are examples of some proper file names for chapter title pages:

  • Ch36 Viz.jpg - from the English Viz Media (Shojo Beat) volume
  • Ch26 Shojo Beat.jpg - from the English Shojo Beat magazine
  • Ch46 translation.jpg - an unofficial English translation of a page from a magazine
  • Memories ch07 LaLaDX.jpg - from the LaLa DX magazine

Manga volume filenames

Certain pages from the manga volumes should also use specific names based on the page and the source.

Examples for Vampire Knight: Memories volume images released by Viz (English):

  • Memories vol## Viz.jpg - Cover
  • Memories vol## back Viz.jpg - Back cover
  • Memories vol## spread Viz.jpg - Cover spread
  • Memories vol## contents Viz.jpg - Contents page
  • Memories vol## title page Viz.jpg - Title page

Examples for Vampire Knight: Memories volume images released by Hakusensha (Japanese):

  • Memories vol## Japanese.jpg - Cover
  • Memories vol## back Japanese.jpg - Back cover
  • Memories vol## spread Japanese.jpg - Cover spread
  • Memories vol## contents Japanese.jpg - Contents page
  • Memories vol## title page Japanese.jpg - Title page

Usage and usefulness

Every image uploaded must have a purpose on this wiki.

  • Usefulness: Images should be useful on the wiki, and provide some form of information to the viewer. This includes being distinct from other images; they should not be duplicates or near-duplicates of other images. If multiple screenshots of a sequence are uploaded, they will be swiftly deleted.
  • Usage: Images that are uploaded should be used. If an image has not been used within an hour of uploading, it will be marked for deletion and subsequently deleted by an administrator.

Issues regarding large submissions of screen captures have arisen in the past. If you wish to contribute screen captures, please consider the following:

  • The screen captures are more than a few frames or seconds apart
  • The importance of the scene being captured
  • What is within the field of view
  • The quality of the source material being captured

Unaccepted file submissions

Any files uploaded with these qualities are subject for immediate deletion:

  • Fan art of any sort.
    • Digital or traditional
    • Manga page colorizations
    • Manga art renders
    • Wallpapers
  • Photoshopped/heavily altered or doctored images.
  • Duplicates of existing images.
  • Self-portraits or "selfies," including ones posted to your own user page.
  • Images of content that does not pertain to Vampire Knight.
  • Screencaps with logos and watermarks i.e. TV Tokyo, Crunchyroll, Kissanime, etc.

Image Violations

If anything you are doing while uploading the image goes against the rules written above, you will first be given a warning. Should you persist to violate this policy, you will be given a minimum of a 1 week block from editing the wiki. If your block has been lifted, yet you continue to violate policies, a longer and possibly indefinite block shall be given consequently.

If you feel you must share an image that would otherwise not be accepted here, such as fanart, consider one of these alternatives:

  • Upload the image on Community Central and import it to your profile page with a template hosted there.
  • Post a link to the image instead. Links should not go to any sites that would not be appropriate for younger viewers, such as sites featuring sexual content.
